When grades don’t tell us what we’re worth
Jean Desplans began his professional life with a high-school diploma, after interrupting his computer science studies and receiving grades that did not seem to reflect what he could do. By specializing in complex systems, he became self-employed and then joined OVH in 2015. Today, he leads the File Storage activity and an enduring team, with one conviction: a grade never sums up a person.

Chronological journey
Grades don’t tell the whole story

Grades don’t tell the whole story
At school, Jean gets grades that do not reflect what he believes he understands. It takes him time to realize that he does not learn in the same way as others and he eventually comes to see grades as too narrow a measure. After high school, he tries studying law and then switches to computer science, without managing to complete the DUT. At home, a PC and the discovery of Unix reveal to him that a professional world exists behind the tools he thought were meant only for home.
Finding a path on the job

Finding a path on the job
After changing direction in his studies, Jean starts out in sales, but quickly realizes that chasing commissions does not suit him. He looks for a way to prove what he can do and, through a contact, lands his first job in IT. He then learns on the job and specializes in IT operations and technical areas that others avoid. This path enables him to build practical expertise, even when degrees still carry weight in hiring.
Assignments that build expertise

Assignments that build expertise
Around 2003, Jean becomes self-employed and launches his IT services business. He works notably for Sun Microsystems and Symantec, then opts for an umbrella employment arrangement in 2006. He subsequently takes on a succession of assignments for Orange Business Services, Thomson, Alcatel, and other clients, often working on critical or complex systems. As companies recognize his skills without always accepting his lack of a degree, he learns to establish himself through his expertise and ability to manage stress.
Entering through the back door

Entering through the back door
In 2015, Jean joins OVH as a systems administrator. He starts as close as possible to production, working on platforms and machines, then becomes an operations manager. He subsequently takes responsibility for the File Storage unit. His career takes him from technical work to overseeing decisions, working methods, service quality, and teams. He also appreciates contributing to a cloud provider with European sovereignty and finding at OVH values that matter to him.

His role
Jean leads OVHcloud’s File Storage activity: the systems that store the files entrusted by customers, including websites, a large proportion of emails, and private cloud services. He ensures their availability, integrity, and expected performance. His role combines technology, strategy, finance, product, and management: he prepares roadmaps, makes trade-offs, and coordinates teams so that everything works together.
His commitments and values
Jean places trust and people at the heart of his management, and knowledge-sharing at the heart of his commitments. His greatest pride is having built a close-knit team at OVHcloud that has lasted over time. He also used AI to prepare an autistic child to discover the company, based on information provided by the professionals who support him.
What he passes on: a grade may signal a difficulty, but it never sums up a person. He advises accepting failure, starting over with what it teaches us, continuing to learn, and seeking the environment where we can thrive.

« I was lucky to get bad grades at school. »
« I wanted to prove that I had value. »
« I took on all the highly technical assignments that people didn’t want because they were complex. »
